Steam Next Fest returns once more this October with a deluge of demos for us to sample. The sheer amount on offer can prove daunting to sift through, but fans of turn-based games might want to turn their attention towards Mechajammer and Kaiju Wars, two indie titles that will take part in the event.
Mechajammer is a dystopian CRPG set on a grimy colony world that “uses simultaneous turn-based combat to create real-time tactics with the precision of turn-based controls.” Seeking to escape, you end up recruiting a squad of mercenaries to help you complete missions and take out the enemies that you can’t bribe.
Mechajammer’s demo has been overhauled for Steam Next Fest’s October edition. Based on community feedback, it now includes a thorough tutorial that uses a more hands-on approach in teaching both combat and stealth, preceding your attempt to escape an enemy base.
Kaiju Wars is a 2D turn-based strategy that tasks you with defending your city against rampaging monsters. You construct buildings and throw as many units at one of five unique kaiju in an attempt to distract and slow them down. The game infuses its retro-inspired visuals with lots of style while also featuring a scenario building when it launches next year.
You can find both Mechajammer and Kaiju Wars’ demos on Valve’s storefront. October’s edition of Steam Next fest kicks off today, October 1, and lasts until October 7.
