With less than a month until its release, The Legend of Bum-Bo’s developers have started releasing gameplay videos showcasing the different character archetypes that players can take on their poop-filled dungeon runs.
Similar to characters in The Binding of Isaac, The Legend of Bum-Bo’s gameplay videos reveal that the protagonist’s archetypes give him different stats and items which he can employ as he does battle with the dungeon’s nasty but familiar denizens.
The Legend of Bum-Bo Gameplay Videos
Where playing as Bum-Bo the Brave favors employing a more straightforward brawler’s style of gameplay, Bum-bo the Wise plays more akin to a magic user, gaining extra moves with each kill. Then there’s Bum-Bo the Nimble, showcased in the latest gameplay video, who gains mana when killing foes.
While it features a somewhat similar dungeon structure to that in The Binding of Isaac with merchant rooms granting respite between fights, The Legend of Bum-Bo plays quite differently.
A match-three-style board takes center stage, determining the actions your character can take. Matching each of its different types of mana has beneficial effects.
Matching poops creates an obstacle on one of the three rows on which enemies are organized, blocking their attacks without restricting yours. Matching boogers, on the other hand, lets you delay the turn of one enemy.
Bones and teeth are your main ways of attacking a foe. You get to do so immediately after matching them by choosing one of the three rows. The bigger the match combo, the higher the damage you deal, if using teeth, or number of attacks you perform, if matching bones.
Each match also counts towards your mana pool which enables you to use the various items that each archetype starts with and which you can buy from merchants as you progress.
The Legend of Bum-Bo looks like a considerably slower game than The Binding of Isaac, leaving much more space for deliberation.
