Real-time strategy game The Scouring has received official mod support more than a month before it enters Steam Early Access. The enthusiastic response from players, who began developing user-made content for the game’s demo, likely contributed to the decision to release the editor and tools so soon.
Developer Orc Group has provided players access to a mod editor and dev build of The Scouring, in an attempt to make creating user content even easier. While the map editor allows anyone with the curiosity and skill to design new battlefields, scripting capabilities (LUA, AI, Scenarios) enable altering mechanics. Furthermore, access to XML Configs also means that users can tweak units, factions, buildings, items, and other elements.
The Scouring Mod Support
“We’ve seen incredible community engagement since Demo launch, and we’ve noticed that some players have started to create and share mods for The Scouring Demo,” Game Director Pavel Zagrebelnyy wrote in a Steam post.
“I wanted to make a game that was moddable from the start (this is why our game pack files are not encrypted, for example). It’s always a pleasure for me, as a developer, to see what our community can create. Mods are great, and they will no doubt contribute to this game’s longevity.”
A previously revealed roadmap placed Steam Workshop support among developer Orc Group’s top priorities post-launch, but with The Scouring’s mod editor now live, anyone with access to the title’s ongoing closed beta can already publish their creations to the platform.
In addition, the developer also confirmed that custom multiplayer games will go live when The Scouring enters Steam Early Access on August 14, 2025.
In case you’re unaware, Orc Group’s debut project channels a hefty dose of classic real-time strategy energy with a few twists. Although it revives the age-old conflict between orcs and humans, the two factions also have to contend with the undead when night falls.
Aside from its classic RTS experience, the early access build also satisfies the urge for a good old dungeon crawl through its hero mode, with survival and MOBA modes completing the list.
The developer expects The Scouring to spend “around 18 months” in Steam Early Access and has confirmed that its price will increase as the title’s full release draws near. Timely mod support has a good chance to grant it some extra longevity, provided it manages to draw in fans of the resurgent genre.
