According to executive producer Casey Hudson, BioWare actually worked on the DLC after they were done working on the main game. Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello announced at the Wedbush Technology, Media and Telecommunications Conference in New York that Mass Effect has sold around 890,000 retail units in the US in its first 24 hours of availability.
