The Ukrainian developer has now officially announced 'Call of Pripyat', though it's just a working title for now as S.T.A.L.K.E.R. gets its third stand-alone. Unlike Clear Sky, Pripyat will be looking to events after the original Shadow of Chernobyl game. It'll have new story, more extended side-quests, and better UI for release this autumn.
The PC specifications for the upcoming new S.T.A.L.K.E.R. from developers GSC have been released on their official website; they're not apocalyptic. The minimum and recommended list fall well within the budget of a reasonably good PC, by today's mega standards anyway. I mean, honestly, who only has 512 MB RAM now?
Russian developer GSC Game Worlds has recently confirmed that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. will be hitting the Xbox 360 console, but it won't before 'Call of Pripyat' is released for PC. As for other major platforms or title releases, GSC's Oleg Yavorsky was coy about specifics. The studio lacks "enough manpower" to make their full console ambitions "come true."
The upcoming S.T.A.L.K.E.R. sequel will be releasing exclusively to PC gamers in Q1 next year, and so misses a late '09 window. The game's demands have been posted. They're quite conservative really and should be okay with just about everyone, unless the last 'big game' you played was [insert generically diss-able PC game here]. Got the gear?
bitComposer Games has announced that S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat will be released internationally in February 2010. Call of Pripyat is the follow-up to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobly. Exclusive for the PC, this new episode will see improved graphics with the support of DirectX 11.
Developer 4A Games has dismissed rumours that Metro 2033 shares technology with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s X-Ray engine, as they aren't similar. GSC's engine for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. "just doesn't scale" to modern day demands says former GSC, Oles Shishkovtsov. 4A Engine "radically different".
Russian developer GSC Game World has "officially" announced S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 to be in development and due out 2012 for PC and consoles. Exactly what consoles it will appear on aren't mentioned. GSC say there are "no doubts left" for the series as it 'exceeds' 4m copies worldwide.
Developer GSC Game World has posted a question and answer on Facebook about their upcoming sequel, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, revealing a lot of new info about the open world first person shooter.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is fairly early in development, but GSC Game World has announced that it would feature the dreaded "internet always on" DRM that has been inflicted on various games, like Assassin's Creed and Command & Conquer 4 in the past, and for the upcoming Diablo III.
When it was revealed yesterday that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 might have the dreaded DRM which requires the user to have a constant broadband connection, the reaction was predictably one of outrage.
A rumor has popped up that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developer GSC Game World founder Sergei Grigorovich was going to shutter the studio and that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was canceled. The company issued a denial on Twitter, stating "No we have not closed GSC or cancelled #stalker2" - but the tweet was itself deleted, leading to even more speculation. [Update: The 1C blog has confirmed the closure.]
Fans of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series were disheartened to learn that GSC Game World was shut down, with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 being cancelled in the process. Those fans may have gotten a Christmas present from the Ukrainian developer, as the company tweeted, "Dear Stalkers: We will not be releasing any official news until around mid January. However there is cause for hope! Good hunting!"
GSC Game World has confirmed that development for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will continue after the holidays, reassuring any fans that feared the game could have been cancelled after it was revealed just before Christmas that the studio would be closed and staff wouldn't be paid until February.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2's status may still be in question, but an animation video from 2011 shows off some of the work that went into the game by former GSC employee Sergey Zhukov.
It seems that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will never see the light of day after all, as it has been announced on Facebook that GSC is finally gone, and the developers from the company have formed a new studio, Vostok Games. Vostok will be working on an similar post-apocalyptic MMO called Survarium.
Since the cancellation of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. II, Vostok Games was formed from members of GSC Game World, and announced that it would be taking the assets that were being used for the shooter and moving it to a new free-to-play MMOFPS Survarium.
Newly formed studio Vostok Games's Oleg Yavorsky revealed that the development team behind S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 attempted to secure the rights to the open world shooter, but were unable to acquire them. The circumstances behind the closure of GSC Game World remain murky,
