The odd turn of events for the week comes courtesy of ZeniMax. 12 years after release, the company is looking to put an end to DoomRL - a fan-made game that predates their acquisition of the Doom IP.
Still playing DOOM? Of course you are. We've waiting a long time for Bethesda to deliver unto us a fresh take on th Doom formula, and they delivered in much the same way they did with Wolfenstein.
You've played The Elder Scrolls Online, strolled the HD streets of Skyrim and seen the breathtaking views of Dishonored 2's 'Clockwork Mansion'. It can only go up for the views of Bethesda's ground-breaking franchises, so where does that leave them? On a Pinball FX2 table, of course.
Is the rebooted DOOM title just not scratching that classic Doom itch? Maybe it is, but you're just looking to relive your teen years with a bit of 2.5D gun-totting action. Sound fun? There's a brand-new Doom 64 mod coming just before Halloween.
Fancy yourself a bit of a speedrunner? While likely not achieved through glitches and wall hacks like the original Doom title, the latest update to breakout 2016 reboot DOOM gives you the tools necessary to charge through the campaign in spectacular fashion.
Bethesda and id have really started to enjoy their surprises, and they’re not making exceptions for QuakeCon. They used the stage to announce an early release for Doom’s first DLC pack, Unto the Evil, a full day earlier than scheduled.
I know we generally cover video games here at GameWatcher--PC games, at that--but this one is too weird not to share. Doom is getting a board game adaptation courtesy of the folks at Fantasy Flight Games. Yes, you and your friends can live out the epic war of marines versus the forces of Hell from the comfort of your own gaming table.
If you were young in the early 90s, your parents might have looked less than favorably on you playing the ultra-violent demon killer, Doom. Thankfully, Ralston Foods had the foresight to release a non-violent advergame based on the game called Chex Quest, which went on to become a surprising cult classic.

Love the new Doom weapons but wish they were in the old games? Wish no more, friends. Thanks to the amazing modders in the Doom community, you can now experience the joy of using the brand new Doom 4 weapons in the original Doom 1 and 2 games. These mods have been created by dedicated modders who have spent time crafting sprite versions of the new weapons. The sprites are then added to the original Doom games with damage values and sweet effects.
It took Zero Master only two days to complete Doom’s Ultra-Nightmare mode. Nightmare mode will be familiar to id Software fans, where the game is the same as it is on hard (in regards to the health and strength of enemies) except enemies respawn after they are killed. Ultra-Nightmare ramps the difficulty up even further by giving players only one life. If you die in Ultra-Nightmare mode, the game simply ends.
Planning on playing DOOM, Homefront: The Revolution or Master of Orion? You should definitely download these drivers first. These Game Ready drivers will ensure that you get the best possible framerates on and offline when playing the above titles. In addition, support for the Vulkan graphics API will be released at a (currently unconfirmed) later date. This is said to further accelerate framerates in DOOM.
OpenGL and Direct3D have been around for so long, but it appears a new competitor has entered the ring, and this guy is powerful. Vulkan is a new type of graphics API, basically, it’s a lot faster than OpenGL/Direct3D because it’s incredibly efficient. id Software worked with Nvidia to get this API working properly in Doom, and it’s very clear what the result of that work is.
You may have heard about Bethesda not giving out DOOM review code to websites prior to the game launching. This means you’ll have to wait until after the game is released to hear our verdict, however you can read the opinions of a few posters on NeoGAF. The multiplayer servers for DOOM are not up right now, but players can still get through the campaign if they happen to get their hands on a console version of the game. Steam restricts PC players from playing the games before their release date, but console players are able to play as soon as they have their copy.
Watch the video at the bottom of this page to see creative director, Hugo Martin, and executive producer, Marty Stratton, of id Software play though Doom’s campaign for an hour. Judging by the video, it appears as though you won’t have to reload your guns during the game. The guns you hold have a certain amount of ammo in them and they won’t stop firing until you run out of bullets. You’ll also be able to hold a large amount of weapons at any given time, unlike the multiplayer mode which restricts you quite a bit. There are also weapon modifications you can make, for example you can modify guns to shoot in bursts, you can change the ammo to fire explosive rounds and so on.
Enjoying the Doom open beta? Well, now you’ve got an extra day to get some more frags in! The official Doom Twitter account has confirmed the beta will now end at April 18, 11:59pm ET (that’s 4:59am for those in the UK). To top off this news ( also announced by the Doom Twitter account), it has been revealed that the open beta has been locked at 60FPS for “beta purposes only”. PC gamers with 120Hz monitors can breathe a sigh of relief that their expensive purchase was not in vain, though your rig is going to have to be pretty powerful to output a high frame rate in this game.
There’s a new Doom game coming out real soon! The closed beta for the game’s multiplayer hit a couple of weeks ago, and while I’m still more interested in the game’s single-player component, I had a good time blasting my fellow doomguys. Now you can too!
Doom’s currently in closed beta for folks who pre-ordered the most recent Wolfenstein. It’s pretty good! If you weren’t in that first wave of players, there’s good news. The beta will be going open soon!
