Steampunk RTS Veil of Ashes Picked Up by Slitherine, New

Slitherine has announced it will publish Greifenmaer’s Veil of Ashes, a steampunk RTS focusing on war machines and colossal behemoths.

While the development studio has been promoting the alternate reality RTS for over two years now with trailers and in-development videos, it’s now that we can expect a proper marketing push with strategy-first publisher Slitherine on board.

Technically, the game is described as a “real-time tactics” title, as the basic gameplay loop has these gigantic tanks and war machines fighting for control of strategic points across a variety of battlefields without a base-building component. Looking at all the gameplay released so far, we’re thinking of the Company of Heroes series and Iron Harvest, for example.

“In 1704, the world was consumed by an unprecedented inferno. When the flames finally subsided, they left behind Cinium, mysterious white fragments, pure as angel feathers and possessing immense power.

Two centuries later, new kingdoms and reborn empires rise from the ruins of the old world, fighting over dwindling resources as a grey veil covers the sky and ash deserts turn the Earth into a wasteland.

Cinium fuels their war machines, powering steam-driven tanks and colossal behemoths as they battle for control of a world slowly fading into ashes.”

Veil of Ashes’ original factions are described as having “unique flavours”, with the theocratic Sacrum Imperium representing a fanatical faction “that overwhelms its enemies with sheer firepower and super-heavy Cataphractus tanks.” Meanwhile, the feudal Lohenreich marches into battle “aboard heavily armored Lanzierer tanks, accompanied by loyal Panzerknecht Soldiers.” At the centre of the game, there’s a system that allows players to mix and match different companies and units to create a different army build for each battle.

Across a “semi-procedural single-player campaign”, PvE, and PvP, commanders can also reshape the vast battlefields with destructible environments and gargantuan units that can be used as cover. We don’t have a release window or a price tag yet, but RTS fanatics can wishlist it on Steam now.
