Independent horror video games abound these days, so it’s not often we’re surprised by news on that front. Steelkrill Studio’s Where Dolls Hang has wowed us with its latest announcement though.
Set to launch on PC via Steam later this year, Where Dolls Hang follows a detective who’s investigating missing person cases. In the game, this involves close examinations of bodies, looking for clues, and documenting crime scenes with an in-game camera. But of course, it’s still labelled as “survival horror”, so there’s tangible danger lurking in the woods…
A new post on X by the developers has revealed players can find old VHS films that can be fully viewed without exiting the game. It’s unclear how many of them have been included, but we’re told that they’ll be around one hour long. Here are the full details shared with the press:
“Set in Mexico and inspired by the country’s folklore and the real-life Island of Dolls (Isla de las Muñecas), Where Dolls Hang blends psychological horror, survival, exploration, and detective investigation. While searching both the forest and your home, players can stumble upon working televisions and projectors that play full public-domain horror films from beginning to end. Rather than short clips or Easter eggs, these are complete movies that players can sit down and watch if they choose. Among the featured films is the iconic 1968 zombie classic Night of the Living Dead, with additional public-domain horror films hidden throughout the world.”
