Bungie’s add-on for Halo 3 has just gotten a lot more interesting, in a Cold Case kind of way oddly. Cast as an ODST marine grunt you’ll unravel what happen to your team.
The city will be open to discover and work through in whatever order the player wants, until you stumble across ”a crime scene” of sorts, and relive as a team-mate for a bit.
Yeah it sounds a little odd for a Halo game but it’s certainly better than just a straight up and quick expansion to running and gunning. You apparently become the team-mate for a bit as you figure out what happened to them, and it’s these moments that Recon will play in its linear fashion.
”This isn’t a crazy dream sequence or metaphorical journey that the object allows you to do,” explains Bungie creative director, Joseph Staten to US mag Game Informer.
”It works just like any detective show, Cold Case or Law and Order or whatever, where a detective can arrive at a crime scene, look at the chalk drawings and bullet holes and see what’s going on. He hears some echoey voices and the camera crossfades and now you’re at the scene of the crime two hours ago.”
He also revealed that the dev has wanted to take a break from Master Chief for some time and have the player explore through a marines perspective, but he says you ”don’t feel like a chump. You feel like a very Capable ODST marine, but it’s a different feeling,” continued Staten.
”In Halo games you’ve been the Chief for a thousand years and the Arbiter for a little bit of time too. It’s a really nice feeling to jump into somebody else’s boots for a while.”
You’re not going to be as powerful as the Master Chief, you’ll be shorter and slower which leads to more interesting encounters, like bumping into a Brute that can and will catch up to you. No shield but at least your health can regenerate and you get some nifty new gadgets to play with.
Halo 3 Recon is due out by the end of 2009.
