GameWatcher studies the Onimusha: Way of the Sword release date, platforms, gameplay details, story, and more ahead of the first Onimusha game in two decades.
Having successfully refreshed Resident Evil, Capcom turns its hand to reviving its dormant action horror franchise, which first debuted on the PS2 with Onimusha: Warlords in 2001.
A quarter of a century on from its genesis, Onimusha: Way of the Sword will look to bring the Genma-slaying magic to a whole new generation of players, and potentially create another modern hitmaker for Capcom.
Here we’ll look into everything we know about Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s release date and more ahead of its release.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Release Date
Capcom initially laid out a 2026 release window for Onimusha: Way of the Sword before confirming during June’s State of Play Showcase that the title is due to launch on September 25, 2026.
- Onimusha: Way of the Sword Release Date: September 25, 2026.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Story
Fight through bloodstained battlefields of intense swordplay action. Explore the historic Japanese capital of Edo-era Kyoto, twisted by malevolent clouds of Malice. With every stage cloaked in mystery, danger, and intrigue. Battle against monstrosities from the underworld known as Genma in a tale of dark fantasy.
Follow the tale of a samurai, Musashi, who wields the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical artefact that grants its bearer the power to slay Genma. Through gritty, blood-soaked brawls, he searches for his reason to fight. What fate awaits at the end of his path? His rival Sasaki Ganryu is certainly one obstacle in his way.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Gameplay
As with previous Onimusha games, players will wield the powerful Oni gauntlet to face off against the Genma masses alongside more traditional weaponry.
Musashi’s sword can be used to strike enemies, parry their attack, or deflect incoming projectiles. A prolonged parry allows Musashi to “steer” his enemy, causing them to fall towards a certain direction.
The Oni gauntlet consumes three flavours of souls for upgrades, health regeneration, and powerful Oni Armaments to destroy foes with relative ease.
