Last year the government said they’d ”collect and review” findings on tax relief to help promote ”culturally British video games”. Terrific!
The Chancellor declared in his 2010 budget, “We need to keep British talent in this country” and the breaks would be ”similar” to those that are given already to the films industry. TIGA, the ELSPA and other groups in the UK will be overjoyed at the news.
For years the videogames industry has been lobbying for tax breaks, as developers in Britain have been neglected by the taxman despite pulling in large revenue.
As part of the Digital Britain report last year the government “committed to work with the industry to collect and review the evidence for a tax relief to promote the sustainable production for online or physical sale of culturally British video games”.
TIGA believes that breaks like those enjoyed by the film industry in the UK will raise about £400m for the Treasury within five years. No actual specifics have been dished out yet by Chancellor Darling, but I’m sure the more boring bits will flow soon enough.
Let’s just hope it’s not all re-election bull…
