Square Enix Just Sold The Rights To Project I.G.I - A

If you were old enough to go into Duex Ex: Human Revolution or its sequel after having played the original at a respectable age, you might remember a certain first-person shooter by the name of Project I.G.I. If you do, you might be seeing it again sometime in the future. But we wouldn't count on it. It's a confusing situation to wrap your head around, but the folks over at Artplant have decide to purchase the rights to the age-old shooter - though publishing rights are still tied to Square Enix. The Norwegian studio is most known for their work on Battlestar Galactica Online or, more recently, Entropy.

Founded in 2001, two years before the game's sequel hit store shelves, the company has Innerloop blood running through it from the start. Essentially buying back their own creation, they're not yet ready to announce any solid plans; but CEO Jack Wulff said, when talking to GameIndustry.biz, the deal "marks the shift in [our] strategy from making games for publishers to producing and owning our own games". He adds that he looks forward to "creating new experiences for fans of the old game and introducing the IP to a new audience"

While it sure sounds like the series might at least see a modern day re-release, a spruced up remake or remaster likely isn't a viable option with Square Enix still in control of publishing. If they don't want it, it can't happen. And though the company has seen success in reboots of both Tomb Raider and Deux Ex in recent years, not all of those attempts have faired as well as the last.
