Company of Heroes - Definitive Edition Gameplay
The core gameplay of Company of Heroes - Definitive Edition remains instantly recognizable for series veterans while benefiting from several changes that bring it closer to its more modern counterparts without robbing it of the magic that made it a quintessential RTS game two decades ago.
Better yet, this is the complete package, containing the base game and its two expansions – Opposing Fronts and Tales of Valor. Squad-based tactics, cover, and environmental destruction continue to be core pillars of its gameplay, with base building being present but taking on a background role.
CoH - Definitive Edition includes four factions – the US Army, British 2nd Army, German Panzer Elite, and Wehrmacht – each with its distinct playstyle. Aside from its three main campaigns and the three stories that make up Tales of Valor, there are more than 50 skirmish and multiplayer maps alongside custom games to look forward to.
As far as improvements go, upgraded unit and environment textures – including foliage that sways in the wind and grass that moves as units pass through it – make for more lively environments. The improved world lighting and shadows translate to an enhanced atmosphere that nonetheless preserves the original art direction and tone.
Although the framerate during gameplay will be limited by vsync, unless the setting is disabled, the developer has confirmed that CoH - Definitive Edition’s cinematics “are encoded at 30 FPS.”
A dedicated reverse button allows vehicles to move without exposing their vulnerable parts, while the option to automatically reinforce units at your faction’s HQ further removes unnecessary friction.
The AI has also been tweaked to ensure newcomers have the space to learn Company of Heroes - Definitive Edition’s intricacies. Series veterans can test their mettle thanks to the addition of the new Ruthless difficulty.
CoH - DE splits its user interface into two sections, rather than a thick bar that eats up a good chunk of the screen, adjusting it to better suit modern widescreen displays. The addition of a global unit control section in between the minimap and ability buttons also allows you to quickly select and order units without panning the camera to their position.
Grid key support and customizable hotkeys are also part of the package. Lastly, the shift to a 64-bit platform not only helps the game run on modern systems but improves mod support, which extends to Steam Workshop.
Company of Heroes - Definitive Edition Story
Company of Heroes - Definitive Edition’s base campaign follows the American forces as they secure the beaches of Normandy during D-Day and push forward to free Europe of Nazi control. Opposing Fronts brings two more campaigns, one that follows the British 2nd Army as it fights to liberate Caen, the other shining the spotlight on the German Panzer Elite during Operation Market Garden.
Tales of Valor features three storylines that make up for their smaller scale through variety. The first pits Tiger Tank Ace Hauptmann Voss’ “highly decorated Tigergruppen” against the British 7th Armored Division on D-Day. The second sees you leading an American Paratrooper Company “in the hours following the initial D-Day landings.” The third is all about the Wehrmacht Army’s struggle to hold the Falaise Pocket as the Allies aim to push through.
