The son of a tailor, Enguerrand Le Bris was born in a far-away region, home to some of the finest sailors in the Seven Seas. At age 15, he joined the crew of a merchant frigate. A harrowing series of mistreatments and misadventures turned the bright-eyed boy into the cynical man he is today.

Timothy Shore was born in a privateering community on a small island. When the privateers turned to piracy to survive, the Crown retaliated by burning the whole village to the ground; Timothy's wife and daughter died in the fire and he himself suffered grievous burns. Reborn as "Phoenix", he retains a deep-seated hatred for the Crown and all that it represents.
