Update 42.1 landed on PC servers June 17 following maintenance that ran from 00:00 to 08:30 UTC, delivering the Ally Duo arcade mode on Sanhok alongside a comprehensive rework of Blue Zone damage, healing items, and weapon spawns. According to PUBG, the patch also introduces Interactive Smoke, a restructured Ranked season, and native PC controller support.
A Croatian Geek-Culture Perspective on Update 42.1’s Live-Service Reach
The Geek.hr Team, a Croatian technology and geek-culture editorial outfit, sees the Ally Duo beta as a meaningful indicator of where PUBG’s live-service design is heading. Pairing every player with an AI companion named Ella on Sanhok, then gating the entire mode behind RTX hardware, signals a live-service experiment rather than a universal content drop. The team notes the specificity of the design choices — from Sanhok’s dense, fast-moving terrain as the testing ground to Ella’s language-adaptive behavior for different regional clients.
“The hardware requirements alone make Ally Duo a beta in the truest sense. Not every player gets in, and that’s clearly intentional — PUBG is pressure-testing AI companion integration in a controlled slice of the player base before it goes wider.”

Ally Duo on Sanhok — Hardware Requirements and Ella’s Design
Ally Duo is a limited-time beta arcade mode that runs from June 17 through July 1 at 07:00 UTC. The mode is set on Sanhok in a TPP duo format, with each player matched alongside an AI companion named Ella. Matchmaking begins solo, and the duo forms after the player enters the match. Total lobby population, including players, Ella instances, and bots, is capped at 64.
Hardware access is strict. The mode is available only on PCs running an NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU. Minimum specifications are an RTX 2080 Ti or RTX 3060 with 8 GB VRAM and 16 GB system RAM. The recommended configuration is an RTX 4070 with 12 GB VRAM and 24 GB RAM. NVIDIA driver 555.85 or later is required, and Windows Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling must be enabled.
Ella’s language behavior follows the client’s regional setting. Korean clients receive Korean-language responses, Simplified Chinese clients get Simplified Chinese, and all other language settings default to English. Her knowledge base draws on game information available before Update 41.1, meaning content introduced after May may fall outside her awareness.
Interactive Smoke and the Blue Zone Overhaul
Update 42.1 introduces Interactive Smoke, a new mechanic that affects both Smoke Grenades and smoke produced by destroyed Gas Cans. When an explosion — from a Frag Grenade, C4, Mortar, the Red Zone, or Karakin’s Black Zone — strikes active smoke, the affected area temporarily disperses. Vehicles moving through smoke produce the same effect. The dispersal radius scales with explosion size or vehicle speed, and smoke gradually refills once the disturbance passes, provided the grenade’s duration has not yet expired.
Blue Zone damage has been converted from a distance-based system to a time-based one, applying across all modes and maps, including Normal Match, Ranked, and Custom Match. In Ranked and Esports play, total match duration drops from 32 minutes 50 seconds to 30 minutes 10 seconds. Normal Match duration stays at 28 minutes 50 seconds. The dynamic Blue Zone mechanic that had scaled based on remaining player count has been removed from Sanhok and Karakin in Normal Match specifically.
Weapon Spawns, SLR Adjustments, and Healing Item Changes
Six weapons have been pulled from world spawns entirely in this update. The Mosin Nagant, R45, DP-28, PP-19 Bizon, P1911, and QBU no longer appear as ground loot, a structural shift that affects how players expect to build loadouts from early-game scavenging.
The SLR received a significant set of adjustments. Horizontal recoil dropped by approximately 10 percent, muzzle velocity climbed from 840 m/s to 870 m/s, vertical recoil buildup was reduced during early and mid stages of sustained fire, vertical recoil recovery improved slightly, and the rifle’s tendency to drift left during firing was reduced. The development team stated in the patch notes that the goal was a more stable shooting experience, adding that the muzzle velocity increase makes it easier to engage moving targets at long range while reducing bullet drop.
Healing items received a broad rebalance. Med kit weight drops from 20 to 15, and usage time from 8 seconds to 6 seconds. Bandages now restore 12 HP instead of 10, with healing duration cut from 5 to 3 seconds and usage time cut from 4 to 3 seconds. Adrenaline Syringe weight falls from 20 to 15, and Painkiller weight drops from 10 to 6. Boost Gauge health regeneration now triggers at shorter intervals, though total healing output stays the same. The team described the rebalance as an effort to make each healing item a meaningful option in different situations rather than concentrating usage around a small number of efficient standbys.
Season 42 Structure, RP Bonuses, Controller Support, and Black Market Changes
Season 42 runs for three months, spanning Update 42.1 through Update 42.3. The PUBG development team stated the extended window is tied to preparations for a broader Ranked Revamp planned for a future update. New consecutive-placement RP bonuses accompany the season launch. Players who finish in the Top 4 in two consecutive matches earn an additional 5 RP. Back-to-back Chicken Dinners yield an additional 10 RP. Only the highest applicable bonus counts per sequence, and consecutive progress resets at season start or following a leaver penalty.
PC controller support arrives alongside the patch. PlayStation DualSense and PlayStation DualShock controllers are not supported in this implementation. The Black Market 2026 Workshop event also returns with one notable structural change — the Double Gacha system has been removed. Players can now obtain Progressive weapon skins and other rewards directly from a single Cargo, replacing the previous Loot Cache and Prime Parcel structure.
The three-month Season 42 runway gives the player base an extended stretch to work within the revamped Ranked framework while the team builds toward larger structural changes. Combined with PC controller support arriving at the same moment, Update 42.1 widens the game’s accessible surface area even as Ally Duo narrows its AI experiment to a hardware-qualified slice of the audience.
