Total War: Warhammer 40,000 won’t have one enormous campaign map containing hundreds of directly playable planets. Instead, developers Creative Assembly are using a layered campaign structure in which a galaxy map contains Crusade Theatres and individual campaigns, with each taking place across one or more planets.
How Many Planets Are in Total War: Warhammer 40,000?
The exact total number of planets in the game hasn’t been confirmed. Instead, Creative Assembly has described how its campaign structure involves Flashpoints, with the largest examples potentially covering several planets. Community discussions on the official Total War forums have cited campaigns ranging from a single planet to as many as nine or 10 planets, depending on the lore that Creative Assembly wants to follow.
Planets themselves aren’t simply single settlements or nodes on a traditional Total War map. Creative Assembly has explained that a planet can contain multiple continents, with those continents functioning more like provinces in previous Total War games. This means a single planet can contain multiple areas to fight over rather than being captured through one battle, as we saw during our Gamescom preview.
The developer has also shown that different parts of a planet can produce different battlefield environments. Key regions can lead to battles involving locations such as hive cities, industrial areas and wastelands, giving individual planets considerably more variety than their representation on the wider campaign layer might suggest.
How Does the Planetary Campaign Work?
Rather than moving armies continuously between hundreds of planets on a single map, Total War: Warhammer 40,000 uses a galaxy-level structure containing different Crusade Theatres. Players select campaigns within these theatres, with completed campaigns contributing to progression across the wider crusade.
This structure means the game’s “number of planets” isn’t directly comparable with the number of settlements or provinces in Total War: Warhammer III, for example. A single planetary campaign can contain multiple territories and battles, while the wider theatre can contain several separate campaigns. Some demonstrated theatre maps have included at least 10 individual campaigns.
For now, then, there isn’t a confirmed answer to “how many planets are in Total War: Warhammer 40,000?” given that the game is designed around multiple planetary campaigns within larger Crusade Theatres, rather than one fixed list of planets that players can all control simultaneously. Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is currently slated for release in 2027.
