Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV brings back base building, resource management, territory control and large-scale real-time battles, while introducing systems such as unit veterancy, on-field reinforcement and faction-specific mechanics. With four playable factions and very different approaches to warfare, understanding the basics of positioning, resources and upgrades will be important for new players.
Dawn of War IV is being developed by King Art Games and published by Deep Silver; the former has been posting regular Battlefield Reports playthroughs and the latter has been offering gameplay advice via the official site. We’ve compiled the best Dawn of War IV tips from both companies here.
What Are the Best Dawn of War 4 Tips?
One of the most important things to learn in Dawn of War IV is how to use the map. Resource points are central to your economy, while controlling territory can provide strategic advantages and limit your opponent’s options. Don’t focus exclusively on destroying the enemy base. Capturing and holding important areas can give you the resources needed to maintain an army and unlock stronger units.
Cover and positioning are also important. Units can survive longer when they’re positioned intelligently, while buildings can be garrisoned to provide additional protection. The official Dawn of War IV site specifically highlights seeking cover and using garrisonable buildings as ways to keep units alive for longer. This makes simply moving your entire army toward the enemy a less effective strategy than choosing where and when to fight.
Don’t overlook unit upgrades and specialization. Dawn of War IV allows squads to be upgraded with different weapons and abilities, meaning your army can be adapted to the threats you’re facing. The developers have also emphasized that choosing appropriate upgrades and using abilities at the right time can be particularly important for preventing opponents from overwhelming your forces with large groups of units.
Veterancy provides another reason to avoid throwing experienced units into unnecessary fights. Units can become more powerful as they survive battles, with veterancy providing different benefits depending on the faction and unit. On-field reinforcement can also keep squads fighting, although automatically reinforcing too many units can rapidly drain your resources.
How Should You Play Each Dawn of War 4 Faction?
Your basic strategy should change depending on which faction you’re playing. Space Marines (including the Dark Angels sub-faction) are elite and can generally win one-on-one engagements, making early aggression and harassment effective. Their expensive units also make preserving experienced forces particularly important. Fortifications, Reserves and the Thunderhawk Relay provide additional ways to reinforce your position or move forces around the battlefield.
Orks take almost the opposite approach. Their strength comes from numbers and relentless aggression, with the official faction guide recommending multiple strongholds and plenty of Waaagh! Banners. Ork players should keep pressure on their opponent rather than relying on individual ranged units to win engagements.
Adeptus Mechanicus players should prioritize their Noosphere Network because its level unlocks important research and upgrades. Meanwhile, Necrons benefit from fighting around their Power Matrix and using their resilience and Resurrection Galleries to recover from losses. Their relatively slow movement means positioning and their various translocation abilities are particularly important.
Recent community discussion around the game’s latest battlefield report (above) has also highlighted how closely players are examining combat readability, melee behavior and animations. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV was recently delayed and is now scheduled to launch Dec. 3, 2026, on PC via Steam.
