Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade's memorable Crusade mode makes a return in Dawn of War 4. For players who prefer to face off against AI opponents, this might be the go-to mode once the story campaign has been cleared. Described by the developers as an "endless mode", Crusade presents flexible and highly replayable campaigns featuring all four factions available in the game at launch.
Players have access to a turn-based world map of Kronus split in different territories. Each turn, limited action points are used to move armies to neutral and enemy zones in an attempt to conquer them while defending your own too. The ultimate goal is to complete a Crusade objective that may change depending on the faction and Commander of your choice. With several action points per turn, each phase has more depth, as you'll be able to come up with multi-stage moves and strategies that adapt to the ever-changing tug of war. Specific targets also reward factions with extra action points.
Like in the Total War campaigns, battles that can be won based on your army strength alone will resolve automatically, but players need to go hands-on to fight encounters that could go either way. While these clashes play out like regular Skirmishes, unit levels, skills, and wargear will be retained over the course of the Crusade campaign.
KING Art has confirmed five of the game's Commanders will have dedicated Crusades at launch, with more being added "free of charge" in the future. Each Commander has their own goals, starting conditions, faction strengths, and weaknesses. Though the length of each Crusade campaign may vary depending on player skill, they're expected to take "eight to ten hours to complete".
