No. Space battles will not be in Total War: Warhammer 40,000 when it launches. Creative Assembly has said that real-time fleet combat most likely is not coming in the form players are picturing.
That is not the same as fleets doing nothing. Your fleet is central to the campaign, and two fleets meeting each other is a thing that happens. What is missing is the part where you drop into a battle and fly the ships yourself.
What Creative Assembly Actually Said
The question was answered directly during two of the studio's own livestreams.
On the Community Inbox stream in February 2026, Total War vice president Roger Collum was asked outright and gave an answer:
"Space battles is something that I want, something that the teams want. Is it going to be there for launch? Maybe not. Maybe it makes it, maybe it doesn't. It will definitely be there eventually."
A little later in the same stream, Collum narrowed it:
"At the moment, space battles is not the focus. And I'd say most likely there aren't real-time space battles, that they will still look at how to represent ship warfare itself, if it's not a real-time one."
By the Gamescom stream in August 2026, the studio's position was firm Asked again, the answer was that space battles "won't be in there for launch, but we know that they're an important part of the IP, and we will look at them beyond" it. Later in the same stream, on fleets specifically:
"We have said there won't be naval battles as in you're going in and you're playing a little RTS. But they're at least for launch."
What Your Fleet Does Instead
Fleets are not just decoration. They sit above the planet you are fighting on and feed directly into the ground battle.
| Fleet role | What it does |
|---|---|
| Orbital bombardment | Fires on the battlefield below as direct support |
| Deployables | Drops equipment and reinforcements into an active battle |
| Reinforcement | Matters most for Space Marines, who cannot replenish from local population |
| Positioning | Where the fleet sits grants line of sight on the campaign map |
The Space Marine case is the clearest example of why this matters. As Creative Assembly put it on stream, you cannot "walk up to the local village and turn some people into a Space Marine" - those reinforcements have to come from orbit, so the fleet is the supply line rather than only a taxi.
Void Conflicts: Fleets Do Fight
Fleets meeting in space is a mechanic with a name. Game director Attila Mohacsi described it to Inven Global in August 2026:
"When two fleets encounter each other, engagement occurs. We call these Void Conflicts."
Fleets can also be upgraded over time, unlocking bombardment abilities and what Mohacsi called "far more powerful superweapons fitting for the 41st Millennium".
What nobody at Creative Assembly has said publicly is whether a Void Conflict is something you play or something the campaign resolves for you. Given the studio's statement that there are no real-time battles at launch, the latter option is more likely, but it has not been confirmed either way.
Will They Be Added Later?
Collum's "it will definitely be there eventually" is a strong statement on record.
Some coverage has suggested space battles could arrive in a sequel, but Mohacsi ruled that option out in August 2026, saying there will not be a Total War: Warhammer 40,000 2 or 3, and that content will be expanded continuously within the one game. If space combat arrives, it will be part of this game.
When Is Total War: Warhammer 40K Being Released?
Creative Assembly confirmed on the Gamescom stream in August 2026 that the game is "coming in 2027". That is not a very specific release window, and the Steam store page still lists the release date as to be announced. A closed beta has been announced ahead of it, though.
