What's New in Planet Zoo 2?

Planet Zoo 2 is shaping up to be a substantial expansion of Frontier Developments’ zoo tycoon/management sim formula, with a ton of new animals and detailed animal behavior, expanded building tools, and a new Wildlife Reserve system. With the game’s release date approaching next month, Frontier has now revealed considerably more about what separates the sequel from the original Planet Zoo.

What New Features Are Coming to Planet Zoo 2?

Two of the biggest additions are the introduction of fully aquatic animals and flying species, taking the full list of animals at launch up to 95. Players can construct aquariums for marine and freshwater animals with underwater viewing areas, while aviaries are built around netted structures that allow birds to fly rather than being restricted to conventional ground-based habitats.

Frontier has showcased a new emotion system in which an animal’s mood is affected by how well its needs are being met. The sequel also introduces more detailed behaviors and movement, with the developer highlighting improvements to how animals interact with their environments. This is intended to make animal welfare more visible while giving individual species more distinct behaviors.

Building has received a significant overhaul as well, with new creative tools designed to make constructing habitats and facilities more accessible without removing the detailed construction options that made the original Planet Zoo popular. The sequel also supports themed scenery (four brand-new ones join five returning themes) and Workshop blueprints, allowing players to use premade designs rather than constructing every building piece by piece

How Do Wildlife Reserves Work in Planet Zoo 2?

Wildlife Reserves are arguably the most significant new gameplay system in Planet Zoo 2 because they take conservation outside the traditional zoo. Players can create and manage natural environments, restore damaged areas, and release animals from their zoos into these reserves. Frontier has described the system as an extension of the conservation themes already present in Planet Zoo.

Research is another important part of the reserves. Players can establish monitoring networks using equipment such as camera traps and acoustic monitors, allowing them to track animals after they’ve been released. Wildlife Reserves can also contribute to accreditation ratings, providing additional game progression beyond simply expanding and improving the zoo itself.

Planet Zoo 2 is scheduled to launch on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on Oct. 13, 2026. From building and managing zoos to a deeper understanding of animal conservation efforts, the new features in Planet Zoo 2 help put more emphasis on how important it is to protect wildlife.
