Is Gears of War E-Day Releasing on PS5? The next entry in the iconic third-person shooter series is due in late 2027, taking us back to where it all began, but an apparent recent shift in strategy on Xbox’s part leaves many wondering whether or not it is coming to PlayStation.
Focusing on the brutality of Emergence Day, the moment when the Locust onslaught began, Gears of War E-Day promises brutal third-person battles and a reunion with the series original crew of heroes. Believed to be part of Xbox’s multiplatform strategy, which saw it releasing titles in core franchises on Sony’s consoles, Gears of War E-Day’s PS5 release appears to be unlikely following its dedicated June 2026 showcase.

Its gameplay trailer shared during the Gears of War E-Day Direct labels it as an Xbox console exclusive, with an article on Xbox Wire confirming that both Gears of War E-Day and Clockwork Revolution, the upcoming RPG from inXile Entertainment, “are not timed exclusives.”

This is a fairly strong signal that Xbox Game Studios will lean more strongly into exploiting console exclusivity going forward, after an initial push which saw several of its titles arriving on PS5.
This comes at a time when Sony is also embracing exclusive releases again by moving away from publishing its major first-party single-player releases on PC.
While Gears of War E-Day will make its way to PC alongside Xbox, PS5 owners are seemingly out of luck.
While console exclusivity might help the publisher gain additional momentum going into its next generation of consoles, it is a bit sad to see fewer gamers having access to iconic franchises due to this return to exclusive releases on both Sony and Microsoft’s part.
