If you’d been missing stylish third-person-slashers with distinct settings, L4S Games aims to bring them back with Black Raven, a 2.5D title which “transports players to the dark heart of the black death amid the sweeping plains and eerie woodlands of Eastern Europe.”
The official Steam page describes it as “an action-adventure third-person-slasher rooted in Slavic mythology. Set in a 14th century fictionalized Ukraine.” As you might guess from the screenshots alone, it’s a bloody revenge story. Much of the focus appears to be on the atmosphere and soundtrack, and so far, it looks like it’s on the right path.
While the specifics of combat haven’t been explained yet, it appears to be honoring old-school, beat ‘em up action from a third-person POV in 3D environments, even though the visuals are being built with 2D sprites. So far, we’re digging the mix of vivid colors and grisly combat and gore.
“Fight a diverse cast of folklore villains with unique strengths, dive deeper into the secrets of the land, and feel the weight of Ivan’s descent into a world gripped by despair and disease,” the first official description teases of the story and the personal journey the main character will go through.
Black Raven hasn’t locked a release window yet on Steam, but we’ll be keeping tabs on it. You can wishlist now, too.
