Steve Ballmer at the Mix08 event yesterday spoke about lots of things. Internet, search engines, the Yahoo! bid…yawn, boring. He did, however, mention at one point that Blu-Ray on the 360 was not just a wet dream, but is a likely, no, highly likely possibility. One that Microsoft is looking into seriously.
He said Microsoft will work with the Blu-ray next-generation DVD format in some form following the demise of Toshiba’s HD-DVD, which Microsoft previously supported. “We’ve already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like, and I think the world moves on. Toshiba has moved on. We’ve moved on, and we’ll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense.”
Sounds good to us. Though with almost 2 and a half years on the shelf, it would be surprising to see a new external drive come out. It would be even more weird to see Microsoft working with Sony on this, which is exactly what would happen…how odd to see that one of Sony’s bigger selling points for the PS3 was that it had Blu-ray…and now that we know it’ll win the format war, that you can get it on the 360 anyways.
