TorrentFreak has published a list of the most pirated titles over the BitTorrent networks for this year, with EA landing up in first and second place.
According to the chart Spore was downloaded over 1.7 million times with The Sims 2 at over 1.1 million. TorrentFreak claims Spore downloads ”inflated due to the DRM”.
”When we posted about the impressive download rate on Spore - inflated due to the DRM that was put into the game - EA doubted our statistics,” wrote the site.
”EA’s Mariam Sughayer said that every BitTorrent download was not a successful copy, and that several downloads didn’t work, were buggy, or contained viruses. We wont deny that on badly moderated torrent sites, malicious torrents probably can be found.”
“However, this constitutes less than 1% of the available torrents, and they are not added to our statistics.”
Crytek have already pledged they won’t be developing any more PC exclusive titles after Crysis: Warhead because of the rampant piracy that takes place for the platform.
It seems that MMOs are the most resistant to illegal copies but even Blizzard’s World of Warcraft has succumbed to piracy as programmers launch their own private servers, but luckily are no were near as sophisticated.
