GOG.com will be launching its service this September and will be offering members a catalogue of PC classics at $5.99 or $9.99 a time. Fully XP and Vista compatible.
Once you buy a game from GOG it’s then yours to keep forever and can be downloaded as many times as you want on any PC. The Fallout series, Freespace 1 & 2, MDK 1 & 2…
Good Old Games (GOG) will be officially starting their mouth-watering service of cult classics this September 2008, but there’s a chance to join them now in their beta going live August 1st.
”Our main goal is to try and deliver the best games of all time for PC,” declared marketing VP Tom Ohle, in an interview with Shacknews.
Titles from Interplay and Codemasters will be initially on offer which includes games like Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Sacrifice, Descent 1-3 and Kingpin: Life of Crime. A full listing is yet to be announced by the site but you can expect a host of other rare gems to surface - especially if they get their wishes and crack open the LucasArts back catalogue, which Ohle described as one of the ”holy grails” he hopes CD Projekt can get a hold of.
Thanks to GOG’s ”handsome programming team, the classics are now Windows Vista and Windows XP compatible.” Most of the classics have been tweaked with custom installers for easy installation and the dev team apparently has access to their source codes too.
There’ll be a community element with discussion boards and exclusive game add-ons. ”With a purchase of any game at GOG.com you’ll also get some great additional materials for free, including game guides, walkthroughs, wallpapers and more,” read the official site blurb.
Good Old Games looks set to really inject the digital distribution service with a cool dose of retro, and at incredibly easy going prices with unlimited access to the games it’ll likely conquer the universe.
