If you’re one to draw some similarities between MKR’s 1978 film Dawn of the Dead and Capcom’s Dead Rising videogame then you might feel there’s a court case to be had.
Well that ship has sailed and Capcom have managed to win the suit which MKR brought against them. US Magistrate Judge Richard Seeborg declared them too dissimilar.
”The social commentary MKR draws from Dawn of the Dead … appears totally absent from the combat focus found in Dead Rising,” wrote the judge.
This battle of the mall zombies in court wasn’t a pretty one and things were in motion for a lawsuit showdown long before the game ever released. Capcom even added disclaimers that the zombie kill-athon wasn’t linked with George Romero’s zombie hordes, but there’s just no pleasing some people.
The REAL crime here of course is the lack of a PC version for Dead Rising, where are the defenders of justice for that blow to society?
