Being able to bust open your PS2 catalogue and whack those discs into the PS3 has been a top wish for PlayStation fans, and now Sony seems to be a step closer.
They’ve gone and nabbed patent rights to an emulation technology for the Emotion Engine chip found in PS2s, meaning that the PS3’s cell processor can ‘pretend’ it’s the PS2 chip.
Siliconera has some diagrams and stuff on the matter, if you feel like that sorta thing. If the technology is really successful then a firmware update for PS3 should be all it would need.
