Tim Schafer from Psychonauts developer Double Fine has said these days fans are too hooked on the raw sales numbers to measure a games success.
Publishers aren’t so heartless he suggests, as long as a team ”make a cool game” then they’ll ”want to talk to you”. Schafer is hard at work on Brutal Legend, ”hot babes and Jack Black.”
”Fans worry too much about sales, to tell you the truth,” Schafer tells MTV Multiplayer. Psychonauts received huge praise from critics and fans but performed poorly when it came to sales, the game had sold 400,000 copies by mid ‘06 but was no longer going to print in the US.
”As long as you make a cool game, publishers want to talk to you…” he continued, with them saying ”‘We liked ‘Psychonauts. and we think we could have sold it better.’”
Brutal Legend was feared dead not too long ago but the rockin’ adventure still lives. Schafer feels this time because of the commercial force behind the game, unlike Psychonauts, it will likely do much better; it’s ”a game that naturally has more commercial hooks, like hot babes and Jack Black.”
