Gears of War man Cliff Bleszinski had a conversation, it was with Deus Ex dude Harvey Smith, and they both agreed RPGs and shooters have a future together.
Does this mean a new Gears? Things were kept subtle and cryptic; it ”depends on where things go” and ”one could wean” from Cliffy’s words that that’s where ”things are going with us.”
He in no way confirmed that Gears of War had RPG in its future, let’s clear that up now. ”I had a conversation with Harvey Smith – one of the lead designers on Deus Ex – and said to him the future of shooters is RPGs. He said he completely agreed,” Bleszinski tells Develop.
He points to BioShock as a prime example of shooter and RPG in a perfect marriage, praising the madman Ken Levine for pulling it off; it’s thought of as an RPG in disguise.
”There was a time when the industry warmed down,” Bleszinski added, ”and then Bioshock came along.”
He remains elusive as to the future direction of Gears, offering: ”It depends on where things go. I mean, one could wean that from the comments I made earlier about the future of shooters is RPGs and see where things are going with us.” Bleszinski, you tease.
Would you welcome some RPG in your Gears?
