The closure of Microsoft Aces Studio, which had been making Flight Simulators since forever, has turned out to be ”incredibly liberating” for ex-staffers as they’ve formed a new studio.
Cascade Game Foundry is a Washington-based developer, and they’ll be reconsidering all their ”preconceived notions,” says Cascade’s Rick Selby. Hardcore sim fans ”critical foundation”.
”The beauty of starting a new studio is that we get to reconsider all our preconceived notions,” said former Microsoft lead product guy Rick Selby, now Cascade creative director.
”Our previous efforts focused on building traditional simulation titles. However, now we get to redefine what a simulation game can be. As a designer, that is incredibly liberating.”
Cascade want to appeal to more, they want to broaden the simulator market. ”The hardcore simulation fan is the critical foundation, but why stop there?” continued Selby. ”We want to deliver unique experiences that appeal to diverse audiences around the world.”
Racking up more air miles or train ticket stubs aren’t the only thing on their mind. ”We want to combine the naturally inquisitive nature of the human spirit with the stunning resources of the planet. The simulation market is known to be a strong, consistent performer, but our vision extends beyond flying and railroading,” added managing director Kathie Flood.
”If you love simulations, the news is going to get better and better,” noted Selby, in their Cascade press release. They’re busy working the design for their first project, and a demo for it.
