The Legend of California’s release date sees us donning cowboy hats as we venture into an open-world action-survival shooter developed by Kintsugiyama, former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan’s new studio. Below, we break down everything known so far about The Legend of California’s release date, gameplay details, trailers, and the latest updates from the developers.
Set on “the mythical Island of California during the gold rush era,” The Legend of California is an online survival experience that we can tackle alongside a group of friends or as a lone wolf, provided we don’t feel like sharing our spoils with anyone.

The Legend of California Gameplay
Gameplay-wise, The Legend of California promises an experience that should be familiar to fans of survival games, albeit in a setting that’s been relatively underutilized in the genre so far.
“Explore, gather, craft, build, hunt, and fight your way across a vast untamed frontier,” its Steam page blurb reads, already promising a host of different activities to engage in.
We will, of course, do so while roaming across an “expansive, ever-changing open world.” Split into several different biomes, it throws “challenging PvE encounters” our way while also giving us the opportunity to discover “iconic California landmarks.”
The Legend of California’s gameplay focuses on first-person combat that “rewards precision and skill” both when facing wildlife and human opponents.
Hearing that an online survival game includes PvP might not be all that surprising, but the developer describes it as optional, which likely has PvE enthusiasts breathing a sigh of relief.
The Legend of California also launches with “robust gathering and crafting systems” that allow us to make our own weapons, tools for expansion, as well as meals that fuel our efforts.
We’ll also get to “establish and expand our own ranch; build a mine, add stables, and unlock powerful new crafting stations to further customize your slice of the wild,” so there will be at least some level of base building for those of us who like to carve a chunk of the map for ourselves.
The Legend of California launches with persistent multiplayer servers, allowing those of us that don’t go at it solo to “form a company with up to three other players, sharing resources, buildings, progress, and more.”
