Sony had a super time last month show NPD’s US sales data, with their PlayStation 3 platform not only outdoing Xbox 360 but toppling Nintendo Wii for the first time ever.
From last September to this one, Sony is the ”big winner” for sure as they’ve more than doubled sales. This is thanks to the ”very strong” consumer reaction to hardware price cuts.
”Compared to last September, the PS3 was the big winner, more than doubling last year’s sales,” said NPD analyst Anita Frazier, reports Shacknews.
”This portrays a very strong consumer reaction to the price decrease as August and September both realized a lift of more than 70% over the prior month.” Everyone has been expecting this news from September’s US sales figures, even Microsoft conceded they’d win.
PlayStation 3 received its long overdue price snip to $300 and Sony also launched the new PS3 Slim at the beginning of September. Xbox 360 also got a reduction in sales tag, to $300. Nintendo Wii dropped its price point to $200 in late September - better late than never.
Here’s the US winners list for hardware in September ‘09:
-
Nintendo DS - 524,200
-
PlayStation 3 - 491,800
-
Wii - 462,800
-
Xbox 360 - 352,600
-
PlayStation Portable - 190,400
-
PlayStation 2 - 146,000
Were you expecting a bigger performance than just 491k from PlayStation 3? It does seem a little anti-climactic after the launch of a whole new console model and price drop.
