Nacon’s issues continue as its three largest development studios in France have been placed under receivership, threatening nearly one-third of its global workforce.
Nacon itself filed for insolvency and requested judicial reorganization last month, so it’s perhaps unsurprising that the effects are being felt elsewhere in the studios it owns
Cyanide, Spiders, and Kylotonn have all filed for insolvency as well, which also affects Cyanide’s subsidiary Big Bad Wolf. The studios employ just over 320 people between them, which is a sizeable chunk of Nacon’s workforce.
As with Nacon, the receiverships will be handled by the Lille Commercial Court.
Notable French Studios in Peril
Cyanide Studios is based in Paris and was founded by Patrick Pligersdorffer in 2000. It has been responsible for games such as Blood Bowl 3, Call of Cthulhu, and the recent, well-received stealth action sequel Styx: Blades of Greed. Its subsidiary, Big Bad Wolf is responsible for The Council, and has been working on the horror game Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, which was due to release in 2026.
Kylotonn has been around for 20 years and is known for its work on racing games such as the WRC series and 2024’s Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown.
Spiders was formed in 2008 and has made games like Bound by Flame, Greedfall, and The Testament of Sherlock Holmes. It has most recently been working on a sequel to Greedfall.
The news comes as a huge blow to the French gaming industry. Hopefully, the process will end up with these studios living on in some form or another, but in the short term, it looks grim.
