Minors are no longer permitted to buy new items or features in-game through microtransactions or view ”unwholesome” stuff in them.
The Ministry also requires the companies to develop ways to better limit the number of hours that minors can play MMO games in China, and they now want all registered users to use their real names instead of an alias.
It’s unclear what ”unwholesome” means exactly to Chinese officials but games already are banned from showing anything that promotes ”advocating violence, pornography, gambling, cults, or superstitions,” reports GameSpot.
These new regulations take effect August 1st. Already China has banned minors from using Internet cafes in the country, with any caught letting a child in and using their services to be shut down for 30 days as punishment - or loss of license if caught twice.
China is a big place, and the Internet even bigger - how well can this be enforced?
