It seems the new K class PlayStation 3 SKU limits the component cables to just standard definition, with high definition output only capable from HDMI.
An internal letter at US retailer GameStop revealed the change. Previous models of the PS3 (A-J) continue component cable HD support. Why the change?
It would appear that the AACS Final Adopter Agreement is the cause behind PS3 not letting component cables provide HD viewing, which limits analogue video outputs to a maximum of 540p. HD runs at the higher 720p and 1080p.
All future models of the PS3 will require HDMI cables for the full experience. Does this mean that they’ll start becoming a part of the standard bundle? From the GameStop letter it would seem that, no, the K PS3 SKU won’t include them by default.
Do you use component cables for your HD viewing? No word from Sony yet.
