Insomniac Games’ AAA first person shooter for the PlayStation 3, Resistance 3, had a disastrous debut month of September, selling a paltry 180K units in the US, according to the NPD.
Making the low sales doubly painful is that the game had the spotlight all to itself in the shooter genre. The game’s 6th September release was two weeks after Deus Ex: Human Revolution and two weeks before Gears of War 3 - both of which charted ahead of the PS3 shooter. Even though Resistance 2 debuted at #9 when it was released in 2008, it still sold twice as many copies in its first month of release than Resistance 3, which was 7th on the list in September.
One of the reasons that have been attributed to the low sales is Sony’s lack of marketing, having thrown its support behind Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. It will be interesting to see what sort of sales Uncharted 3 enjoys - the game is due to be released 1st November.
