According to the publisher, ”The Chocobo whistle item will be introduced, allowing adventurers to call forth their personal mounts while out in the field. These chocobos will boast a speed advantage over their rental counterparts, and all adventurers are wholeheartedly encouraged to aspire to a bird that they can call their own.”
However, in order to get your own Chocobo, players must officially enlist in a Grand Company (achieve a rank higher than recruit) and acquire a chocobo issuance for 3,000 company seals. They then have to speak with the stablemaster NPC representing their Grand Company at various specific locations in the world and be issued a Chocobo and a summoning whistle. When players get their Chocobo, they will be given the opportunity to name it. All company Chocobos are male, by the way.
Future patches promise to include customizable barding along with a system for developing a player’s Chocobo, and to develop the player-Chocobo relationship.
Those who don’t have the wherewithal to get a Chocobo can still rent one. By paying a fee in gil, players can have a rental for predetermined duration. Upon confirming payment, the player will be taken to an area immediately outside the bounds of the city-state to start their journey. Rental Chocobos are not as fast as personal mounts.
Then there’s airships, which will be a quick-travel mode between the three city-states, much as they are in World of Warcraft.
