Funcom has announced that over 500,000 users have registered to beta test the occult-themed MMO The Secret World.
“We are thrilled to see the amount of interest ‘The Secret World’ is generating among gamers and the press, and exceeding half a million beta registrations six months before release is definitely something we are proud of,” Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas pronounced. “The gamer interest in ‘The Secret World’ and the community size for the game is even greater than we experienced with ‘Age of Conan’ at the same stage of development. We expect the community size to keep on expanding at an ever faster pace in the coming months as we approach Open Beta and launch.”
In The Secret World, which takes place in the modern world, players align themselves initially with three secret societies - the Illuminati, the Dragon, and the Templars. (They can join smaller societies later in the game.) Each society has their own base of operations, and every society works with other societies to hold back a supernatural invasion, while competing against each other to hold power, resulting in a fluid friend/enemy dynamic during the game.
The Secret World is still accepting beta applications, which can be registered at the official website here.
