Tancharoen has been tapped to direct the 2013 bound movie, being scribed by his pal Oren Uziel. They ”hadn’t been actively thinking about” it until Legacy.
”It’s really important that we show we can bring our game properties to movies instead of just the other way around,” said Warner home entertainment President Kevin Tsujihara. New Line Cinema will begin production next year with it due for theatrical release in 2013.
Warner Bros. acquired the Mortal Kombat franchise from Midway Games in 2009 for $49 million as the company went bankrupt. In April this year the ninth Mortal Kombat game released which has been the most successful yet selling 3 million copies.
It was the nine-part Web series that sealed the deal which director Kevin Tancharoen landed after his short teasing film of how he’d like to do a Mortal Kombat feature movie. The miniseries allegedly cost around $2 million to make and went viral.
”The new game and the online shorts prompted us to consider a reboot of a brand we hadn’t been actively thinking about,” said New Line boss Toby Emmerich. The company produced two Mortal Kombat films back in ‘95 and ‘97, but ”haven’t aged well.”
This new film is said to be a more ‘realistic’ portrayal of the iconic beat-em-up series, and is expected to have a budget well under the $100 million mark. The next videogame in the series will be co-ordinated with the film’s production as it’s under the same roof.
