Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson is so devoted to the idea of helping Tim Schafer and Double Fine produce Psychonauts 2, he's pledged he could personally cover the entire $13M in development costs for the game.
According to Schafer, “As soon as I mentioned the amount of money (Persson) said, 'Yeah, I can do that.' He said he had no idea it would get picked up like this. He said, ‘Sorry for putting you on the spot, I didn’t realize it would go so big.' I feel like I was being proposed to on the jumbotron at the baseball game.”
Schafer also expressed a desire to work with Persson, even if the project wasn't Psychonauts 2, stating, "He’s been pretty successful. And, when you look into it, it’s a really inspiring story. He’s just a regular guy. He didn’t do anything sleazy to get it. He just made it himself, distributed it himself, it’s a great story. I think we have a lot to learn from him, so I’d like to do something with him." Schafer added, "And I’d like to make Psychonauts 2.”
Last week, Persson told Scahfer via Twitter, "@TimOfLegend Let's make Psychonauts 2 happen," after Schafer had openly complained, "I’d love to do that game, but I’d have to convince someone to just give me a few million dollars. That’s all.”
