Since these so-called ‘sourced’ morsels of info got out it’s been all depressing, but worry not because the THQ PR brigade swears 2014 is jam packed with IP goodness from their studios.
The THQ stock has been trading rather low recently and these ‘rumours’ haven’t exactly inspired confidence in the publisher, but they seem rather unfounded as it happens.
”THQ has not cancelled its 2014 line-up, and has not made any decisions regarding the planned MMO. As part of the ongoing review of our business, we have made decisions to ensure that the company is strategically addressing the most attractive markets,” stated a THQ rep.
”As we have previously announced, we have dramatically reduced our commitment to the kids’ boxed games sector which leads to a significantly more focused release schedule moving forward. Our slate for calendar 2012 and beyond is focused on high-quality core games and continues to build our digital platform and business. We are excited for our pipeline of original and high-quality content along with our relationships with some of the best talent in the industry.”
The offending twitter junkie responsible for a window into a THQ-less world is one Kevin Dent, head of the IGDA’s ‘Mobile Special Interest Group’. He said he’d heard down the grapevine that the Warhammer 40k MMO was scraped and that licensing was being returned to their various owners to wipe 2014’s line-up.
Naturally he was inundated with responses and ending up back peddling on his statements, which he claimed came from friendly sources within various THQ development studios. Dent avoided naming these ‘sources’.
THQ has refocused all their efforts now to core games as they’ve jettisoned their kids brand titles for not performing anywhere near the level they once did. Homefront is being handled now by Crytek, Saints Row is more than ready for another go at Volition and inSane, from director Guillermo del Toro, make up THQ’s agenda.
Then there’s Darksiders 2, more WWE and of course the big Warhammer 40k MMO.
Would an end to THQ put a serious frowny face on you, video gamer?
