Instead they opted for an English Final Fantasy 4 on SNES. Someone happens to have the "only legitimate copy" left of Square's work and they're selling it. How much? That'd be $50,000.
Final Fantasy 2 was never released on the NES in the West. The cartridge has been photographed and is revealed to by a one-off demo from Square for use at CES back in 1991.
It's labelled as a sample but the entire game is playable from start to finish in English.
"I have been the proud owner of this cartridge for over nine years now, and as far as I am aware, this is the only legitimate copy of the game that exists," said owner and eBay seller fefea. "Any other copies you have seen of Final Fantasy 2 for the NES have been bootlegs, this is the real deal."
"A pre-production sample cartridge for any video game from this era is rare indeed, but for one to survive for a game that was never actually released is something of a miracle. Having that unreleased game be a part of one of the most important franchises in video game history is basically unheard of."
The Final Fantasy 2 NES Demo/Sample cartridge is still listed on eBay for would-be suitors.
A real piece of video game history? Let's hope so.
