Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee revealed that troubled Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning developer 38 Studios has laid off some of its staff. Chafee also confirmed that not every employee had been paid, after earlier news that the developer had paid $1.15M of its monthly debt repayment; the first payment’s cheque had bounced.
These laid off personnel did not include the contractors and temp workers that were let go.
This also comes after the confirmation that the developer’s current project, their Project Copernicus MMO, was on target for a February 2013 release.
If 38 Studios folds, the state of Rhode Island will own its intellectual properties, including Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Reckoning is considered a potentially profitable property, since it was a collaboration between such talents as Ken Rolston, R.A. Salvatore and Todd McFarlane.
