Zipper Interactive, which was best known for developing such titles as Crimson Skies and MechWarrior 3 before being purchased by Sony as a first-party developer, may be facing closure or severe layoffs. Sony had laid off 33 personnel from the developer back in May 2011.
The developer, under Sony, was chiefly responsible for the SOCOM titles on the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3.
According to inside sources, Zipper is in the process of being shutdown. The reason seems to be due to the relative failures of SOCOM 4 and MAG, which didn’t get the user attachment that the publisher had expected.
Over the past week, Sony has repeatedly declined comment on the issue.
The most recent title developed by Zipper was Unit 13, a third-person shooter for the PlayStation Vita.
