Players take on the role of a god who rule over nations over the course of three eras, and every nation has historical or mythological troops that are connected to real world history and mythos. "When you start the game you decide what kind of god you are and how your Dominion affects your lands and followers. It is an expression of your divine might and the faith of your followers. If your dominion dies, so do you. Your dominion also inspires your sacred warriors and gives them powers derived from your dominion," states the developer.
The new co-op mode is called the Disciples Mode, in which players take on the roles of "disciples", demi-gods who work together to ascend to godhood.
Veteran games will appreciate improvements to the user interface, as well as game streamlining which add such features such as the ability to auto-recruit, set battle formations, wrap-around maps, improve fortifications, among others. They will also find 20% more units and buildings to choose from.
