There’s certainly a lot more history to the Elite franchise than most games - the original came out back in 1984, and Frontier: Elite 2 was the last entry released way back in 1995.
That makes the upcoming Elite: Dangerous something of a highly anticipated title. You can find out all about the series’ resurrection in this new, fifteen minute documentary released by Frontier Developments.
Elite: Dangerous was of course Kickstarted back in 2012, to the not insignificant tune of $1.7million. This video details the teams’ attempts to update the classic space sim franchise. There’s a lot of talk of wanting to respect the source material of the original game, but understanding that there’s a need for new systems and modern mechanics.
Including fancy new graphics, an even larger galaxy to explore, modeled on our own universe, and of course a persistent online backdrop. Still, despite all the (very welcome) bells and whistles, the legacy of Elite is alluded to with the visually enhanced versions of the iconic wire-frame player ship and docking stations.
This should get you in the mood for Elite: Dangerous itself, which is expected to release later this year on PC.
