In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only… chess? You can now pre-order strategy game Warhammer 40,000: Regicide, the game that swaps bishops and rooks for plasma cannons and weirdboyz.
Developer Hammerfall has also released an in-game video, showing off the goriest interpretation of the world’s most famous boardgame you’ll ever see.
Regicide isn’t quite a pure chess game, as you can see from the first few seconds of the video when a space marine flings a frag grenade at some unfortunate orks. It uses the same basic board layout, but units have various moves that can affect multiple squares or hit distant targets. The footage above is all in-game, and actually quite impressive. Those models and animations wouldn’t look out of place in a more traditional RTS.
As for the various pre-order editions, there’s several to choose from. Each includes a copy of the game as well as a few extras, including t-shirts, hoodies, posters and more. The cheapest is available for $29.990 AUD/£15 and includes a CD key and a t-shirt, while the most expensive will set you back $89.99 AUD/£46 and includes a CD key, the t-shirt, a poster, certificate and more.
We still don’t have an exact date for Warhammer 40,000: Regicide, but it’s expected out in the first quarter of 2015.
