The Five Nights at Freddy’s success story keeps getting more and more astonishing - the latest development is that after three games in the horror series, Warner Bros has picked up the rights to make a feature adaptation.
It’s been less than a year, astonishingly, since creator Scott Cawthon came up with the original game. From cult Greenlight hit to Hollywood movie in under twelve months. Pretty crazy.
“We’re looking forward to working with Scott to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie,” said Seth Grahame-Smith of KatzSmith Productions, who are handling production duties on the film alongside Vertigo Entertainment.
”The story really lends itself to being a movie and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to,” said Cawthon himself. Being terrified of muderous puppets is indeed something we can all relate to. Personally I hope the entire film is just a frightened man staring at a security feed for two hours.
Whether the film can really capture Freddy’s lo-fi, VHS horror charm is up for debate, but I’m certainly intrigued to see how it pans out. The producers are currently looking for a writing team for the project.
