I’m always slightly leery about video games casting high-profile actors in key roles, because it often seems like a bit of a waste of cash; see Patrick Stewart’s laughably brief appearance in Oblivion, or, and this is my personal favourite, the brilliant Christopher Walken sounding completely baffled/slightly drunk in the intro to True Crime.
But then again think Christopher Lloyd is brilliant, so I’m hoping he, Zelda Williams, and the rest of a fairly high-profile cast sound a little more involved in the Odd Gentlemen’s re-imaging of classic adventure King’s Quest.
Lloyd plays the ageing King Graham, while Zelda Williams is cast as “no-nonsense” blacksmith Amaya Blackstone. Also revealed in the cast trailer released yesterday are Tom Kenny (the voice of Spongebob Squarepants!) as con-man The Merchant of Miracles, and the brilliant Wallace Shawn (probably best known as the crafty Vizzini from The Princess Bride) as Manny the Knight.
That’s quite a cast. Also starring are Maggie Elizabeth Jones as Gwendolyn, and Josh Keaton as our hero, Young King Graham. There’s some footage mixed in with the cast interviews, and it’s looking pretty great, a light-hearted fairy tale adventure with some lovely cartoonish visuals.
The first episode of King’s Quest is expected to drop later this year.
