Darth Maul was one of the most overhyped characters since Boba Fett, and ended up having only a slightly more anti-climactic fate than him in his sole appearance in The Phantom Menace, which lead to the subject of a canceled videogame called Battle of the Sith Lords. That game may be revived thanks to the upcoming Star Wars movie, according to the former developer.
In a [ur=https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/3q2mpm/hi_im_dan_borth_of_red_fly_studio_the_creators_of/]Reddit AMA[/url], Red Fly Studios’ Dan Borth stated, ”“We have been burning a candle for this game since it was killed in hopes we can get it turned back on again. IF that is to happen we need to approach EA with a demo that will impress them. I think we have that or are close to it. Still it is completely not up to us.”
The development of Battle of the Sith Lords was twisted and confused. At the time, the developers initially wanted the game to follow Maul’s life culminating with his death in the Phantom Menace. However, George Lucas informed them that Maul survived being bisected by Obi-Wan Kenobi, but didn’t reveal anything of Maul’s role in the animated series The Clone Wars.
He then wanted the team to have Maul work with Darth Talon, but since Talon lived 170 years after Maul did, then the “Darth Maui” in the game would be either a descendant or a clone. As Borth stated in the AMA, ”Darth Talon was interjected into the story. From there the main character really wasn’t Maul but was an heir of his that was basically just like him. We thought we could design that character to look different but that was not something they wanted.”
However, LucasArts during the game’s prototyping stopped communicating with the developer due to the Disney sale, and finally, the game was canceled on 24 June 2011.
